Barney Williams plays for Aston Villa Acadamy - February 2009

On Thursday 19th February 2009 Sharks ‘keeper Barney Williams turned out for the Aston Villa Academy side as they took on Chelsea at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground.

Each club put out 2 teams of nine with each side playing a total of four matches on outdoor pitches which were in superb condition. In his first match Barney was in superb form as he made several fine saves as Chelsea were not afraid to shoot from any distance. He also showed bravery in twice saving at the feet of the onrushing strikers as Villa ran out the 5-1 winners.

The second game was a much closer affair which ended in a 2-all draw the highlight for Barney being a long range effort that he tipped over the bar.

The smaller Villa team physically tired for the return games as the bigger and more powerful visitors began to take control and ran out the clear winners. Barney made several saves but the lack of defence left him exposed and he had little chance with any of the goals.

All of the teams displayed tremendous skill and work rate. They tackled hard and looked to pass the ball, but they also were not afraid to take players on and shoot from distance.

Playing four games one after another was mentally as well as physically tiring for Barney as a great deal of concentration was required for a long period of time. He was soon asleep on the journey home and for once was keen to get to bed.

Being a keen Villa supporter it was a great day for Barney who was very proud to pull on his Villa shirt and with the first team training at the same time there was plenty of time to get a few autographs and have a photo taken with Steve Sidwell while Barney’s younger brother Jake managed to get his picture taken with his favourite player Ashley Young.

Scorpions reach Christmas unbeaten - December 2008

The Scorpions achieve an unbeaten run into Christmas for the season scoring 107 goals from the beginning of the season to date and conceding just 9. Well done boys for such a fantastic achievement.

Scorpions at Hardwicke Rangers Tournament, Gloucestershire - July 2008

The Scorpions had entered the Hardwicke Rangers tournament with high hopes of achieving a first tournament win as they were playing in their correct age group this time round whereas they had played a year above themselves all season and on the evidence of today they had benefited massively from this experience.

The rain was hammering down when the lads kicked off and this did not deter them playing superb football against the hosts. Harry Cotterill was to open his competitive goalscoring account with his new team mates since signing on with a very good brace that could have easily been a hatrick had it not been for some marvelous keeping from the Hardwicke keeper. James Francis was to add the third and the lads were up an running. 3 - 0 to the Scorpions.

The second game was against Abbeymead a very useful side with some excellent technical players, the Scorpions rose to the occasion and bombarded their opponents goal relentlessly and it was Olly Twigg who was to secure a very good battling win with an excellent goal in the second half. 1 - 0 to the Scorpions.

Game 3 was against Severnside B and this was to be an emphatic score line of 5-0 to the Scorpions with Harry Saunders scoring an excellent brace and Olly Twigg, Harry Cotterill and James Francis scoring one each. A very good win and one that was required to ensure qualification to the next round. The final group game was against a very good side from Hereford called Hinton. The Scorpions had to win to ensure they finished top of the group and avoided the best runner up position.

They duly obliged in a very good game where the Hinton side proved a very tough test and it was a great win 2-0 to the Scorpions. A fantastic save from George Baker ensured another clean sheet. The semi's beckoned.

The Semi-final was to be against Highnam. The Scorpions knew this was their chance to reach a final and they lifted their game superbly winning 3-1 to ensure a final place. At the end of the game the lads ran to the parents celebrating a fantastic achievement, but there was more work to be done against a very good side, Longlevens, in the Final.

The final was moved to a bigger pitch that was always going to suit the Scorpions with their passing game and their wide players. The Support was superb from the parents and Nunnery Tigers were also there to cheer the young lads on. They did not disappoint and played some superb football and dominated the game from start to finish. They did everything but score and eventually after extra time it was the dreaded penalties. The crowd held their breath and the atmosphere was electric, Here we go again, Olly Twigg was the first to put his hand up to take the first pen and he stuck it away with great power, then the turn of the other team and they duly scored 1-1, then George Baker stepped up, scuffed his shot and the keeper saved it, Oh No!.

Then the Longlevens player stepped up and he missed, still 1-1, up stepped, Harry Cotterill, his parents couldn't look, but cool as you like he buried it, 2-1 Scorpions. Up stepped the Longlevens player and he put it wide, then came Harry Saunders who also scored very cooly when his dad couldn't cope under the pressure.

This was it, the next one would win it for the Scorpions if George Baker could save it. The Longlevens player stepped up and George saved it and the players and parents went crazy, there were grown men in tears and Mums jumping for joy. The Scorpions had done it they had won their first tournament.

A fantastic effort scoring 14 goals and conceding only 1 in open play, well done lads you deserved it and to the credit of the opposition they were the first to congratulate the Scorpions.

Scorpions at West Bromwich Albion - February 2008

The Scorpions had the pleasure of experiencing the facilities and the opportunity to play in a round robin tournament against teams from Coventry, Cheltenham and WBA.

The Scorpions won 3 and lost 2 narrowly to the 2 West Bromwich Albion sides 1-0 and 3-2 respectively.

The lads played superbly well and did themselves very proud and the parents were the loudest there. A great experience for all.

It was a good day that just showed how far the lads have progressed for their age.

Ashley's visit to the Emirates Stadium - November 2007

Ashley's first trip to watch his beloved Arsenal playing was at home against Reading and couldn't have been any better. Ashley and his dad got to the stadium and Ashley very excitedly asked "Can I get to meet one of the players Daddy", to which his dad replied "It would be nice, but you just don't get a chance these days". They then went and bought a match programme and milled around the Emirates waiting to go in.

They finally went into the stadium about an hour before the game and the excitement built up to kick-off. After a tense first half resulting in no goals for either side half time arrived and with it came the draw for the winning programme. The number flashed up on the screen and Ashley announced, at a volume all the people in the stadium could hear, that he had won!!!!

The prize was a free mobile phone and, more importantly, a chance to meet the player of his choice.

After a more exciting second half resulting in a 2:1 win for the home side, it was time to go and collect the prize and meet one of the players. Ashley decided he wanted to meet Cesc Fabregas and couldn't get down to the Media Centre quick enough.

Ashley and his dad were given a warm welcome had been waiting for half an hour when one of the Arsenal staff arrived with Theo Walcott in tow and asked Ashley if he would like to meet Theo instead of Cesc, Ashley told them in no uncertain terms that he still wanted to meet Cesc, which didn't do a lot for Theo's confidence, but his time will come. After a further quarter of an hour Cesc finally turned up for a photo and a bit of a chat with Ashley and his dad.

So, what a day out, suffice to say that Ashley slept all the way home and will be an Arsenal supporter for the rest of his life, especially if his dad has anything to say about it.
