COACHING

COME AND LEARN TO PLAY FOOTBALL with NUNNERY WOOD COLTS F.C.

Darren - Mobile 07812 065023 Rob - Mobile 07814 975557 Chris - Mobile 07770 385610

We run coaching sessions at our Battenhall Road ground (see Home Venue page for directions) every Saturday afternoon from 1pm during the regular football season. The FA call this a Development Centre, we call it Woody’s.

Rob, Chris and Darren run Woody’s, with other club coaches ably assisting on a rotational basis. All the coaches are FA qualified, have undertaken emergency first aid and child protection training and have been CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked.

Many of the budding young players progress into the clubs team structure either by joining existing squads or when the club forms new teams during spring/summer each year. e.g. 9 of the original Panthers. 7 of the original Leopards and the whole of the original Hawks, Sharks, Scorpions and Lions were direct progressions from Woody’s.

Competitive league football starts at Under 9, but we are looking to form teams at Under 7 (current school year 2) who will then play in weekly friendly games organised with other local teams as part of the learning process whilst at Woody’s. Please use the contact details if you are from another club and wish to arrange some games.

Our F.A. qualified coaches aim to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for girls and boys of all abilities from age 5 and upwards to learn to play football. As well as the basic football skills, we try to encourage sportsmanship but most of all, to have FUN whilst learning the game.

"LET PLAYING THE GAME BE THE TEACHER"

a fun session at woody's

A typical session lasts a minimum of one hour, but very often we get carried away and carry on a little bit, so that the children's enthusiasm is not cut short prematurely.

We normally try to incorporate a fun warm up, usually with a ball each to gain familiarity, followed by a skill practice. Practice takes place in small groups, each with its own coach. The children then take this skill into an organised drill or small-sided game, which emphasises how that skill should be put into practice. We use small-sided games so that there is more player participation with each player getting the opportunity to practise skills, pass, shoot, learn positional play and generally get a lot of touches of the ball in real game situations.

Next, the session moves into practice matches for each age group. Teams are picked and the children just express themselves. We let the games flow as much as possible, occasionally stopping to coach something not done quite right or, to praise anyone doing something well, especially anyone using the skill we practised earlier on. After the final whistle, we have a very brief discussion to re-emphasise the main learning points of the day and give a few individual pointers, then finally, player of the week trophies are awarded, which they all look forward to. A favourite game seems to be second-guessing who it will be from comments we make in the de-brief.
